CALL FOR ENTRIES – The French Art Colony

Invitation to enter in the 42nd Annual Festival Exhibit and Competition

RULES TO ENTER – REQUIRED READING!

Submit up to 4 pieces.  Only (1) entry may be marked NFS (not for sale).  Complete and fill out the entry card and identification tags, using the corresponding letters, and place ID tags in the upper RIGHT hand corner on the back of each work.  Sign the entry form.  Bring submissions, meeting the criteria listed below, to the second floor classroom (**) of the French Art Colony, 530 First Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio on the                                                                                             *DATES & TIMES TO BE ANNOUCED*

Criteria for Entries

All four entries must be creative, original, solely the work of the entering artist, and not previously exhibited at the FAC.  There is no restriction on place of residence of entering artists.  Paintings, inspired by photographs, should be from photographs taken by the artist.  Pieces must not exceed 60 lbs; 2D pieces must not exceed 48”x72”; 3D pieces must not exceed 36”x36”x72”H.  Entries NOT ACCEPTABLE for this competition are: copied works, anything made from a commercial pattern, ready-to-make-kits, or commercially poured molds.  All 2D pieced must be framed and wired for hanging.  No frames will be accepted with tab or saw-tooth hangers.  Do not use masking tape to secure backing.  Artwork not meeting these requirements will be disqualified from judging and display.

Categories

Entries may include, but are not limited to, drawings, paintings, graphics, traditional film photography, digital photography, enhanced photography, fibers, jewelry, and three dimensional works.  Call if you are uncertain about acceptability or placement.  At the discretion of the FAC, very fragile or heavy items may remain at the FAC for viewing on July 4thWork submitted to this competition should be appropriate for viewing by both children and adults.

Divisions

Artists, 18 years and older, may register as professional or amateur.  The professional division includes those who teach art, win prizes, commission regularly or earn their living through art.  Students, or those who practice their craft for recreation and enjoyment, should register as amateur.

Jury Process

Each year, we contract with three new jurors form the tri-state area.  Entries are judged, with critiques recorded for later disbursement to all entering artists.  Awards in amateur and professional divisions are given, based on categories submitted.  Forty to sixty works are chosen for display in the galleries.  All entries have the potential to remain as part of the juried exhibit and must be available for the entire month.

Awards

Monetary assistance has been provided by a grant from The Ohio River Border Initiative, and joint project of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, and support from local sponsors.  First Place winners receive $100 awards.  Second Place winners receive $50.  Best of Show in each division receive an additional $100.  Awards are not automatic in each category and will be given at the discretion of the judges.  Professional and amateur divisions will be judged separately.  All cash awards are presented at the opening reception.

Sales

A 25% fee is retained from all sales resulting from this exhibit.  It is preferred that all works submitted be for sale; however, one piece may be marked NFS(not for sale).  Work marked NFS must have an insurance value stated in parentheses on the entry from.  Payment for all sales will be mailed no later than August 31st, 2010.

Purchase Awards/Ribbons

Purchase awards will be selected *DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED*, by private and corporate art collectors from the region.  Only juried work, selected for the gallery exhibit, are included in the process.  Awarded artwork in the gallery exhibit is designated with a special ribbon, and listed in the exhibit brochure.  Purchase awards and winning entries will be published in the 42nd Festival Exhibit brochure and featured in local newspapers, including photographs.
