The 2008 Festival Exhibit

Juried Gallery Exhibit and Art in the Park

July 1st - July 27th

Jurors’ Statement

(Amy Landrum, Ron Luce, & Margaret McAdams)

It has been a privilege to judge this year’s show.  The range of work by artists in the region, both amateur and professional, provided us with a challenging, entertaining, and broad array from which to choose.

We come together as three individual artists who had never met previously.  Our task was to individually review and select works to be displayed in the FAC and Riverfront Festival.  Then we met to discuss and debate the discussions, we arrived at the award winners.

We are pleased that all the work will be on display for public viewing.  There are, of course, many deserving artists here.  Unfortunately, we could only award what we considered to be the best of the best.  However, our thanks and appreciation go out to all of these talented people.  We hope that our recorded comments are of value to them.  As artists ourselves, we understand that criticism of any kind has the potential to cause negative reactions.  Our goal was to be honest as individuals.  We honor different perspectives and respect the right of artists to be the final arbiters of their own work.

The 2008 Festival Competition

The French Art Colony is proud to have organized this art competition for forty years.  Amateur and professional artists, primarily from the tri-state area, are invited to enter four works, which are judged by three professional jurors.  Each year judges are sought from Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.  They select the works for the galleries and determine awards.  There is no requirement for awards in any category, unless, in the opinion of the jurors, the work is superior.

The competition is extremely competitive due to the high quality of entries in both the amateur and professional divisions.  Consequently, fine work can be found in the city park on the Fourth of July as well as in the galleries.  Many of the honored works are selected by corporate donors, local businesses and individuals to receive Purchase Awards.  This allows entering artists to view their creations in banks, businesses, board rooms, area medical centers, as well as personal collections.  Part of our vision statement includes this encouragement of artists and benefit to the community.
